Cancerbackup was introduced to Jersey in 1987 by the late Dr Vicky Clement-Jones. Vicky, having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, established a link with the late Bryan Skinner, a local businessman, following the publication in the Lancet Medical Journal of an article he had written, as a patient, highlighting the need for a cancer information service. It was from this initial contact between these two fellow patients that the ideas and inspiration for an accurate information service, available to anyone who had to cope with the effects of cancer, were explored and developed and, BACUP (as it was originally called), was established in London. The national Cancerbackup Information Service became Europe’s leading cancer information service and was the wonderful legacy of two remarkable people and the result of their vision and determination and having now merged with Macmillan Cancer Support is an integral part of one of the largest cancer charities in UK.
Cancerbackup's information service in Jersey was originally established and operated by a dedicated team of volunteers, until the appointment of a Cancer Information Nurse Specialist, in April 2002, a post currently held by Tracey Fallon. Cancerbackup Jersey's Committee oversees the funding and running of the service, which is quality assured by Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK who support our Cancer Information Nurse Specialist and audit the service delivery.
The Cancer Information Nurse Specialist's work is supported locally by the Family Nursing and Home Care Divisional Manager for Community Services, who is based at the Le Bas Centre, St. Helier.
